The Latest from Venus

Hey there. Sorry I haven't posted here in a while. We are still having our Friday Tastings @ The Fieldhouse. These will happen every Friday into the forseeable future. We will always have some great wine and interesting conversation about these wines and wine in general. I love it when people ask questions in the store and at the tastings, and I can usually tell you a little more than you care to know. This week, Meredith is returning to share some fantastic wines from Milbrandt Vineyards in Columbia Valley, Washington. You'll remember Meredith from the Ponzi/Cline tasting - everyone enjoyed her descriptions of those wines. We both enjoy Milbrandt on par with Ponzi and Cline as well, especially for their Merlots which show that Merlot can be a truly interesting, complex, and satisfying varietal, when grown in a great location.

Butch and Jerry Milbrandt are brothers who grew up in a farming family in eastern Washington state. They planted their first vineyard in 1997, and now farm over 1600 acres in 13 distinct parcels. They sell most of their grapes under contract to several larger premium wineries, as well as performing custom crush services for smaller wineries in their state-of-the-art facility. For the Milbrandt Vineyards label wines, Butch and Jerry work closely with their winemaker Gordy Hill, and vineyard staff to coax their ideal qualities from each varietal throughout their favorite rows and blocks of each vineyard. The other aspects of their business seem to subsidise the Milbrandt Vineyards label - these wines all drink well above their prices.

We will be pouring the Milbrandt Vineyards Traditions Riesling, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Merlot, and Legacy Reserve Merlot. The Traditions wines are each $12, regularly priced at $16 whites & $17 Merlot. The Legacy Reserve Merlot is on sale for $20, regularly $23.

Visit http://www.milbrandtvineyards.com for more details about Milbrandt Vineyards and their wines.

Moved many fixtures and stacks around in the wine department. The store is getting even easier to browse and shop, with similar wines grouped together. There is still another tweak or two to come, but I'm quite happy with the changes so far. Please come take a look and let me know what you think.

 Cheers!

Jim

Venus Wine and The Fieldhouse Restaurant are back to our regularly scheduled Friday Night Wine Tastings. Please join me at the Fieldhouse from 5:30 - 7:00 pm. We'll be tasting six fantastic wines from the Don Sebastiani & Sons portfolio. The wines are all outstanding values that over-deliver on quality, and are all among my best selling wines. I will be joined by Sam Miller from Don & Sons to present the wines. I'm expecting this to be one of our more memorable events - they just keep getting better.

$8 to taste 6 wines.

The Menu:

  1. Pepperwood Grove Riesling - South Australia - $7
Pineapple & lime flavors and just a touch of sweetness.
  2. Pepperwood Grove Viognier - California - $7
Ripe apricot & honeysuckle and a touch of sweetness.
  3. The Crusher Viognier - Wilson Vineyard, Clarksburg, CA - $14
Ripe pear, apricot, and tropical fruits with a layer of vanilla oak on the long finish.
  4. The Crusher Petite Sirah - Wilson Vineyard, Clarksburg, CA - $14
Enormous, full-bodied, dark fruits, spices, complex and intriguing.
  5. The Crusher Cabernet Sauvignon - Wilson Vineyard, Clarksburg, CA - $14
Also Big, with dark berries, currant, and earthy complexity.
  6. B-Side Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon - Napa Valley, CA - $22
A Bordeaux-influenced blend of selected lots from out-of-the-way vineyards.

All of these wines are created by Richard Bruno & Greg Kitchens, the same Winemakers who have guided Don & Sons winery operations since the beginning of the company. They have developed these brands and others to display very different personalities and offer great, consistent, value at the given price point. We'll have a good opportunity to compare two Viogniers to each other as well as two Cabernet Sauvignons made in very different styles.

Lookng forward to seeing you there!

Jim
